One of the most fascinating aircraft ever to take to the skies, the Concorde SST (Supersonic Transport) is the result of a joint effort by England and France. This Supersonic Wooden Model Concorde is easy to make and easy for beginners.
The planes, which weigh close to 200 tons and are over 200 feet long, can cruise at a speed of 1,450 miles per hour.
The unusual needle-shaped nose is lowered during landing and takeoff to provide pilots better forward visibility.
Wiki says on 10 April 2003, Air France and British Airways simultaneously announced they would retire Concorde later that year.
They cited low passenger numbers following the 25 July 2000 crash, the slump in air travel following the September 11 attacks, and rising maintenance costs: Airbus (the company that acquired Aerospatiale in 2000) had made a decision in 2003 to no longer supply replacement parts for the aircraft.
Although Concorde was technologically advanced when introduced in the 1970s, 30 years later, its analog cockpit was outdated. There had been little commercial pressure to upgrade Concorde due to a lack of competing aircraft, unlike other airliners of the same era such as the Boeing 747.
By its retirement, it was the last aircraft in the British Airways fleet that had a flight engineer; other aircraft, such as the modernized 747-400, had eliminated the role.
This virtually indestructible wood model of the SST is easy to construct, and with its moveable nose is sure to be a hit with any youngsters and probably many grown-up too.
All of the components for the model, with the exception of the landing gear, are made from hardwood. Make patterns by enlarging the square drawings.
Begin construction by woodturning the fuselage.
Drill holes for the nose strut; cut slot for the tail and notch for wings; then very carefully slice off the nose section at a 10-degree angle.
Locate the exact center of the faces of the nose and fuselage and drill 1/2 x 3/4 in. blind holes for the pivot. Make sure the holes are perfectly centered and at exact right angles to the faces of tho parts. Glue the dowel only in the nose section. Rotating the nose, [losening it for limiting (down), or for flying (up).
Cut the two wing sections and the tail from 3/8 in stock and sand all the edges and surfaces. Drill the holes for the landing gear struts in the wings sections then the wings and tail in place. Cut the engine pods sand and glue in place on the undersides of the wings. Make sure the rear faces of the pods are aligned with the cutouts on the trailing edges of the wings.
Use a hacksaw to cut the steel rod (available at most hardware stores) for the three landing gear struts. The five sets of wheels can be either turned from square stock or made from lengths of 3/4 in. dowel, grooved to indicate the tires. The two-wheel nose gear is drilled and fitted directly to the metal strut while the four wheels for each main gear assembly are drilled and fitted to the 1/2 in. dowel truck section that mounts on the strut.
The finished SST model can be either painted or finished naturally with several coats of semi-gloss lacquer. Please go ahead and tailor-make you model to impress.
